Culture for Kids, created by Club Passim in 1999, is a free, monthly, multicultural program whose goals are to provide children with exposure to other cultures and peoples. An emphasis is placed on children who may not have the benefit of cultural and artistic opportunities in their schools or communities. Our goal is, in part, to help build an openness and tolerance for others among our participants, skills they can take forward from this program into the rest of their life experiences. Many of our artists and performers are found in the local area, thus reinforcing the concept that the rest of the world is not so far away.
Culture for Kids was created in part, through collaborations with the International House of Blues Foundation, The Cambridge Performance Project and other community organizations. The afternoon program celebrates a rich variety of communities including: the cultures of Bolivia, Ireland, China, Cape Verde, West Africa, Russia, Newfoundland, India, Brazil, Cuba, Iraq, Native American and American folk cultures. Each program fuses music, history and performance and usually includes a visual art workshops. Many programs feature traditional cooking representative of a specific culture or ethnicity. Collaborations with the Children's Museum, the Harvard Square Business Association, and the Cambridge Arts Council ensure that our community outreach programs bring a broad variety of musical styles to the greater Boston community.
